Today's Topic: DNA Reveals Becky’s Great-Grandfather
Larry Olson and Michelle Wilson worked together to ID Larry’s wife’s great-grandfather, whose identity has been a life-long mystery. Larry applied the Leeds Method to isolate matches to Becky’s paternal grandmother, Myrtle, and then to further isolate the subset of those who did not relate to Myrtle’s mother. Larry called in Michelle for assistance when the resulting targeted family had a father and son, same-named, who both looked to be plausible candidates. Michelle’s knowledge of French-Canadian names and resources allowed them to drill into more distant matches to get a definitive answer between the father and the son, finally revealing Becky’s great-grandfather.
This talk will explore the Leeds Method as well as record sets from Canada, Michigan, and Minnesota used in the search. Finding a great-grandfather using DNA is not a trivial matter; this session will show you that it is, however, sometimes possible. Larry and Michelle will co-present.
About the DNA SIG
This group focuses on learning the methods for analyzing DNA test results. We study topics such as autosomal DNA, mitochondrial DNA, Y-DNA and surname projects, X-DNA and ancestral admixture results. We'll also investigate third-party tools for analyzing your raw data and comparing DNA and gedcom data with test kit results from companies besides the one you tested with.
DNA can break down genealogical brick walls once thought impenetrable – but only if you know how.
This SIG endeavors to be interactive and welcomes your questions. Get ready to put your DNA results to work for you!
SIG Lead: Michelle Wilson
Future Topics: If you have a topic you would like to present or see presented, please reach out to Michelle at DNA @ caggni.org.
Meeting Style: This SIG is typically hybrid. For this session, you may attend the lecture portion (first hour) remote or in-person at TBA. Note that the Workshop, which will begin about 1 pm, is Live-Only at TBA location.
